The property
What's here
Wee Wilds is at Glentruim, about 8 minutes by car from Newtonmore, inside the Cairngorms National Park: a B&B in the main house and two glamping pods on the hillside above it.
Maria and Robert are on hand when you arrive and a phone call away if anything goes wrong; the rest of the time the house and the pods are yours. The hens are real, and so is the dog (a sprocker spaniel called Furgus, not allowed in the bedrooms).
The B&B has rooms across two floors, two with their own shower room and two sharing one, a sun-room, a sitting room with a wood-burning stove, and a shared guest kitchen. A light continental breakfast is laid out in the kitchen each morning. Each pod has its own front door and en-suite.
Local walks start at the door: the viewpoint behind the house, the river below it. The big hills are 15 to 20 minutes by car.
The setting
Cairngorms National Park
The Cairngorms is the largest National Park in the UK — bigger than the Lake District and Snowdonia combined. It sits at a higher elevation than the rest of Scotland, which means more reliable snow in winter, wilder weather on the tops, and air that smells different when you step outside.
Glentruim is at the southern edge of the park. Speyside is an hour east. The West Coast is an hour west. Inverness is an hour north. Most guests underestimate how much they can get to.
From the door
On your doorstep
Glentruim Viewpoint
A 45-minute walk from the door up the hill behind the property. A plaque at the top marks the geographical centre of Scotland.
River walk
A short walk from the property to the river. Deer and hares are regularly seen.
Creag Meagaidh — 20 min west
A National Nature Reserve with a walk up through birch woodland to Coire Ardair loch. Recommended repeatedly by guests.
Loch Morlich + Green Loch — 25 min north
Woodland walks with wild swimming. The Green Loch gets its colour from the surrounding pines.
Coire an Lochain — 30 min north
Walk up from the Cairngorm ski centre to a high corrie loch. Wild swimming in season.
Wildlife
What you might see
Red squirrels live in the trees around the property. Deer are common on the hill above the house and along the river. Hares appear in the fields year-round.
Dark skies here are exceptional — the Milky Way is visible on clear nights. Aurora sightings happen several times a year, usually in autumn and winter.
