The approach track to WEE WiLDS — golden morning rays streaming through beech and oak on a misty autumn morning

Our Place

A home, not a hotel

WEE WiLDS is the name we trade under. The place itself is Glentruim — a farm on the old Glentruim estate, five minutes from Newtonmore, inside the Cairngorms National Park.

Maria and Robert live here with their family. The hens are real, the dog is real (a sprocker spaniel called Furgus, not allowed in the bedrooms), and breakfast is made fresh each morning in the kitchen. You're staying in a home. That's the point.

Guests have four B&B rooms in the main house and two standalone glamping pods — each with their own en-suite, their own front door, and their own atmosphere. The pods are on the hillside above the house, the B&B is the house itself. There's a sun-room, a sitting room with a wood-burning stove, and a shared guest kitchen.

You can walk out of the front door and be on the hill in minutes. That's why most people come.

Cairngorms National Park

The Cairngorms is the largest National Park in the UK — bigger than the Lake District and Snowdonia combined. It sits at a higher elevation than the rest of Scotland, which means more reliable snow in winter, wilder weather on the tops, and air that smells different when you step outside.

Glentruim is at the southern edge of the park, which puts you closer to the Dalwhinnie Distillery than to Aviemore. Speyside is an hour east. The West Coast is an hour west. Inverness is an hour north. Most guests underestimate how much they can get to.

On your doorstep

Glentruim Viewpoint

A 45-minute walk from the door up the hill behind the property. A plaque at the top marks the geographical centre of Scotland. No car needed — just boots.

River walk

A short walk from the property to the river. Deer and hares are regularly seen. Good at any time of year.

Creag Meagaidh — 20 min west

A National Nature Reserve with a walk up through birch woodland to Coire Ardair loch. Recommended repeatedly by guests. Spectacular in all seasons.

Loch Morlich + Green Loch — 25 min north

Woodland walks with wild swimming. The Green Loch gets its colour from the surrounding pines. Loch Morlich has a beach. Both popular and both worth it.

Coire an Lochain — 30 min north

Walk up from the Cairngorm ski centre to a high corrie loch. Wild swimming in season. One of the more dramatic half-days available from here.

What you might see

Red squirrel at WEE WiLDS — a wild red squirrel perched on a fence post, looking directly at the camera

Red squirrels live in the trees around the property — the Forest Double B&B room is noted by guests as the best spot to see them from the window in the mornings.

Deer are common on the hill above the house and along the river. Hares appear in the fields year-round. The bird feeders at the kitchen window attract bullfinches, chaffinches, and the occasional great spotted woodpecker. Ospreys have been seen from the property in summer.

Dark skies here are exceptional — light pollution is minimal and the Milky Way is visible on clear nights. Aurora sightings (Northern Lights) happen several times a year, usually in the autumn and winter months.

Driving directions

From the A9 (south — Edinburgh / Perth / Dalwhinnie)

Travel north on the A9. About 60 miles north of Perth, at the end of a short stretch of dual carriageway, take the left turning signed Glentruim and Laggan.

From the A9 (north — Aviemore / Newtonmore)

Travel south on the A9. About 3 miles south of Newtonmore, take the right turning signed Glentruim and Laggan.

After turning off the A9

  1. Cross the railway bridge, continue along the single track road.
  2. Continue for about one mile, round the bend.
  3. Take the third turning right — signed "Mains of Glentruim" (after the caravan park and Glentruim House entrance).
  4. Turn sharp right, follow the track through the fields.
  5. The property is about 500 metres along the track.

From the A889 (west — Laggan / Fort William / Isle of Skye)

Turn off at Catlodge and follow the single track for 3.3 miles. Just past the "Centre of Scotland" stone at Mains of Glentruim, take the second left (sharp dog-leg — avoids the private farmyard). Then turn sharp right and follow the track.
